Being in Ketosis is a natural metabolic state in which the body burns fat for fuel instead of carbs.

It occurs when carb intake is very low, prompting the liver to convert fat into molecules called ketones.

These are then used as an alternative energy source by the brain and body.

This state is the foundation of keto diets, which are high in fat, moderate in protein, and low in carbs.

Ketosis can promote weight loss, improve insulin sensitivity, and enhance mental clarity.

It may also be used therapeutically for certain medical conditions, such as epilepsy.

Entering ketosis typically takes a few days of restricted carbohydrate intake.

During this period some people may experience temporary side effects.

This is known as the “keto flu,” including fatigue, headaches, and irritability.

When managed properly, nutritional ketosis is a safe and effective metabolic state.

Ketosis is different from ketoacidosis, a dangerous condition most often seen in uncontrolled diabetes.
